What is Cranston doing about stormwater?

The City of Cranston is one of thirty-two Rhode Island municipalities located completely or partially in an Urbanized Area automatically designated under the Phase II program.

In Rhode Island, Phase II regulated communities will be required to apply for a Rhode Island Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (RIPDES) permit which will be issued by Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM). These communities will be required to reduce the discharge of pollutants from their storm sewer systems to the "maximum extent practicable" to protect water quality.

As part of the permitting process, these regulated municipalities are required to prepare and submit Storm Water Management Plans (SWMMP) that address how the regulated MS4 will comply with six minimum control measures that are expected to significantly reduce stormwater pollution.
